What is Food Allergy? - A Simple Guide For You

A food allergy is a medical condition in which the body's immune system reacts to a particular food or ingredient as if it were harmful, even though it is not. When a person with a food allergy consumes the food to which they are allergic, they may experience symptoms such as itching, swelling, difficulty breathing, and even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.

Food allergies can occur at any age, but they are most common in children. Some common allergens include peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish. People with food allergies must be careful to avoid the foods to which they are allergic, as even a small amount can trigger a reaction.

It is important for people with food allergies to be aware of the ingredients in the foods they eat and to always read food labels carefully. They should also inform their friends, family, and caregivers about their allergies and carry an epinephrine injector (also known as an EpiPen) in case of a severe allergic reaction.
